Biopsychosocial
Biopsychosocial model of health refers to the idea that health outcomes are a combination of biological, psychological and social factors. Very few health conditions can be fully attributed to only a single factor and mental health especially is often associated with genetic predisposition, social stressors and psychological triggers.
This means a psychological trigger in 100 people will not lead to mental health distress in all of them, and even in those it does lead to distress it will not be in the same form. Therefore management cannot be merely to manage the psychological condition as it is clear their social supports and genetic predispositions impact on how they respond to stressors and also what treatments are most effective.
Dr. Kay’s role as a mental health GP is to manage all aspects of an individuals health, not just mental health. She is able to approach your health from the direction you are ready for. That means if you want to deal with your anxiety first then that is what she can focus on. Additionally, if you feel like your physical fatigue and chronic inflammatory condition is the most important component at this stage, she can start with that as well. Over time your treatment process can be modified as your focus and priorities change. Many patients find that having to go to one doctor for their physical health and somewhere else for their mental health can fragment their care when all these aspects are so closely interconnected. While seeing Dr. Kay your mental and physical health will remain integrated even as focus shifts.
